The size of your world

Whenever we are feeling anxious or overwhelmed it usually boils down to two causes:

  1. We are not making our world small enough (aka. not focusing on the next task).
  2. We are not making our world big enough (aka. not seeing how this thing right now is anything but a small piece of a longer bigger timeline).

The middle is what most times causes the distortions to our perspectives.

Usually, doing Tim Ferriss' fear setting exercise helps with the not big enough.

For the not small enough unfortunately, it takes discipline, will, and focus.

FOMO

The concept of missing out implies that whatever is happening right now will never come back.

This opportunity will never come back.

Fear comes from a place of scarcity. FOMO specifically, comes from a frame of scarcity of opportunities.

This opportunity will never come back, and there might never be another one.

However this is seldom true in practice.

There is always another job.

There is always another impression.

Another laughter.

Another love.

Another opportunity.

All we have we are not supposed to

Evolution was not our god given right. It probably was more like our lucky break.

Not to long ago we were (arguably still are) monkeys eating bananas, floating on a massive rock through space and time.

All this that we have, jobs, computers, intelligence, safety, internet, etc. we are not supposed to have.

Lower the bar for your happiness, because it is all a gift.

In the eye of the Beholder

"Art is in the eye of the beholder" [1]

Art is not really art unless someone, a consumer of said piece of something, considers it art.

The same can be said for everything else:

  • ____________ is in the eye of the beholder
  • success...
  • offense...
  • caring...
  • love...
  • need...

Agreeing on this opens a pandora's box of discussions and tangents, but we can derive two important truths without too much discussion.

1. whenever you want something from other people: recognition, money, permission. You need to make things for their eyes, as they will be the beholders, not you [2]. Most things in life come from other's collaboration, help, and support. Not thinking and building with others in mind does not work in practice.

and...

2. what we think of things is not what they are but how we interpret them. You can see offense, or you can see a person talking. You can see your life as a failure, or you can see your current situation as a formative time in your life. It all depends of what you want to see.

The list of truths doesn't end here.

[1] quote by E.A. Bucchianeri, Brushstrokes of a Gadfly link
[2] of course, you can make sure these beholders are people that are like you in which case you can make it for yourself as well. That is the ultimate goal.

"What and how" > "Where and who"

Purpose is something we can add to our actions instead of something we have to wait to stumble upon.

When we realize this, the question we ask ourselves turn from: "how do I find my purpose/what is my purpose?" to "where should I direct my actions in order to help others?".

We can turn it from "what" and "how", to "where" and "who".

Try this next time you find yourself asking yourself about your purpose.
