In the eye of the Beholder

"Art is in the eye of the beholder" [1]

Art is not really art unless someone, a consumer of said piece of something, considers it art.

The same can be said for everything else:

  • ____________ is in the eye of the beholder
  • success...
  • offense...
  • caring...
  • love...
  • need...

Agreeing on this opens a pandora's box of discussions and tangents, but we can derive two important truths without too much discussion.

1. whenever you want something from other people: recognition, money, permission. You need to make things for their eyes, as they will be the beholders, not you [2]. Most things in life come from other's collaboration, help, and support. Not thinking and building with others in mind does not work in practice.

and...

2. what we think of things is not what they are but how we interpret them. You can see offense, or you can see a person talking. You can see your life as a failure, or you can see your current situation as a formative time in your life. It all depends of what you want to see.

The list of truths doesn't end here.

[2] of course, you can make sure these beholders are people that are like you in which case you can make it for yourself as well. That is the ultimate goal.
